More Sketches

Something I forgot to mention in the previous blog, in a discussion with the client, we agreed that the tonality of 'rude but not offensive' comes off in the name itself, so I don't really need to visually show that.

I did more rough sketches with watercolour pens and markers today. Thank goodness I brought them over from Malaysia 2 years ago (this is the first time I touched it in those 2 years!) I think the markers really help to get in a thick, organic feel. I experimented with blocky text as well as swirling accents and it kind of goes well together when they're all of the same line thickness. It also definitely helps if I don't think too much on how to 'craft' it and just go freehand.

Experimenting with 'clashing' letters. Blocky and hard (sharper edges) versus round and friendly?

I might play around with the layouts in Illustrator and make some changes. I'll also do the extrusions in Illustrator - thinking that that's a decorative element 

Also thinking that the sticker peeling back concept could be played around in Illustrator so I didn't sketch those out.

Gonna get some feedback from the client before I move on :)

Yesterday, Sarah Maxey, our Graphic Design lecturer gave us our first assignment - The Black Square Exercise. We were all assigned different letterforms for this exercise - I got the capital letter 'B' ! We have to make at least three different compositions on a white sheet using four squares of black paper. Back To The Drawing Board: Concept 1

I decided to do some explorations and sketching on Procreate because of the wide variety of brushes they have - it's perfect for calligraphy. Here's a timelapse of the first concept - you can really see how I tried different styles before settling on one that has squarish blockish shapes that's similar to my references. Some screenshots of my explorations below. Tried some chunky as well as thinner calligraphy styles here. Didn't look 'funky' enough. Just more experimentations of layout and style. Tested some more blockish letters with different brushes and layouts. In the end, I settled with this layout because I wanted to show how different sizes of letters - people - come together to make up the roller derby community. I received a really fun brief for the logotype assignment! ******* Name of Client:   Go Stick It       Type of organisation:   The client is Marcia (Meat Train) Black – a queer, deaf Roller derby  player, based in Wellington. https://attitudelive.com/player-page/marcia-two-sides-of-me Marcia is producing custom-made vinyl decals for helmets and car windows (mostly roller derby themed).
