Back To The Drawing Board: Concept 1
I decided to do some explorations and sketching on Procreate because of the wide variety of brushes they have - it's perfect for calligraphy.
Decided to add a star within the 'O' to represent the jammer position in roller derby.
A subtle grain texture looks better than a really strong one, given that it's done in Illustrator. I also experimented with different stroke weights to give it that punk roller derby vibe.
Here's a timelapse of the first concept - you can really see how I tried different styles before settling on one that has squarish blockish shapes that's similar to my references. Some screenshots of my explorations below.
Tried some chunky as well as thinner calligraphy styles here. Didn't look 'funky' enough.
Just more experimentations of layout and style.
Tested some more blockish letters with different brushes and layouts.
In the end, I settled with this layout because I wanted to show how different sizes of letters - people - come together to make up the roller derby community. I also wanted the spacing in between to be tight so that it represents how in roller derby everybody's always huddled together to block the jammer.
Refining the logotype.
Making it chunkier.
After cleanup.
Decided to add a star within the 'O' to represent the jammer position in roller derby.
Cleaned the edges and rounded corners in Illustrator.
Started to play around with placement of the subordinate text. Decided to use the Lemon / Milk font which is free for personal use (commercial needs a donation amount).
Chosen final because it fits closer to the logo as a whole, would waste less sticker space if being printed on a sticker together. Decided to add some grain and see how that would look like. I'm aware that the grain would not be able to show up if it's printed as a sticker, but I was thinking these versions could be on posters instead.
The thicker stroke weights makes it stronger, especially if it's to be printed as a sticker.
Final. Tested with some colour taken from one of the references the client liked.
Time spent: 2 1/2 hours
