Layout Ideas + B Word Dump

I kind of want to play with typography a bit and add some personality to the zine but I'm reminded that I shouldn't try to over-edit. That's not the point of the brief. So I'm doing my best to let the letterforms shine and only use text if it's truly necessary.


During class, I sketched a possible layout plan. 

I think I've got a pretty good idea which works I want to include in my zine, but I haven't found anything that I'm happy to use for a poster yet...

I'm thinking of making a story for the zine...so I've been compiling a list of words that start with B. Here are the list of words that I've come up with so far.

The 'B'lack Square Exercise

Yesterday, Sarah Maxey, our Graphic Design lecturer gave us our first assignment - The Black Square Exercise. We were all assigned different letterforms for this exercise - I got the capital letter 'B' ! We have to make at least three different compositions on a white sheet using four squares of black paper. Back To The Drawing Board: Concept 1

I decided to do some explorations and sketching on Procreate because of the wide variety of brushes they have - it's perfect for calligraphy. Here's a timelapse of the first concept - you can really see how I tried different styles before settling on one that has squarish blockish shapes that's similar to my references. Some screenshots of my explorations below. Tried some chunky as well as thinner calligraphy styles here. Didn't look 'funky' enough. Just more experimentations of layout and style. Tested some more blockish letters with different brushes and layouts. In the end, I settled with this layout because I wanted to show how different sizes of letters - people - come together to make up the roller derby community. I also wanted the spacing in between to be tight so that it represents how in roller derby everybody's always huddled together to block the jammer. Refining the logotype. Making it chunkier. I received a really fun brief for the logotype assignment! ******* Name of Client:   Go Stick It       Type of organisation:   The client is Marcia (Meat Train) Black – a queer, deaf Roller derby  player, based in Wellington. https://attitudelive.com/player-page/marcia-two-sides-of-me Marcia is producing custom-made vinyl decals for helmets and car windows (mostly roller derby themed). Big Picture:  There is no one in the derby community known to be doing this in New Zealand. People get stickers from Ali Express, Etsy, Iko Iko, roller derby brands/ events. Roller derby is still unknown by many people in New Zealand, but it is one of the fastest growing women’s sports in the world. People of all genders play.
