Zine Content Ideas + More Lettering By Hand

Today, I thought of the text I was going to put in the zine. I really want to do a whole piece of content that only uses words that start with the letter B, but obviously it's going to be really hard to find something like that on the Internet - especially one that might relate to letterform. I might just need to write it myself.

I was also toying with the idea that each page could represent a different characteristic of B, depending on the style of the letterform. For example, one page could be brave. Another could be bashful. And the body of work chosen would kind of represent that personality somehow...?

I also did more exploration with hand lettering today. Here are the results.

Experimenting with different shapes. I like this one cause it's more organic.

A smaller and neater version of the blackletter form.

Playing with negative space - reminds me of the black square exercise again.

Exploring graphic shapes - makes it look like the B blocks are tumbling down some stairs.
More simple shapes - building blocks for the zine perhaps?

A failed experiment - not sure where I was going with this.

Trying out different line widths and accentuating the highlights

The on one the left I wanted to play with the size of the top bowl, and wanted to see if I could make a B that's as thin as possible. It looks somewhat like an exclamation mark! The one on the right was a redo from the last exercise, because the previous one was smudged.

The previous one made me think that it looked like someone peeking out from behind a pillar, so I decided to try something like that. I really like how this one turned out - it can be 'Bashful B'.

Lots of B scribbles to create a big mess of B. Was thinking of B-flat, which is a musical note. And I was trying to see if I could recreate the note. Also on the right, half of the body of a guitar could make the 'B' form, but I obviously botched it up.

Toying with the idea of having staircase B's go across a spread of the zine.
Don't think it turned out very well...

More experimentation...somehow B could look like eyes if you flip it the right way.

B for 'bounce'!

Testing 'bounce' some more. Also trying out some more shapes as well as line widths.

B also looks a lot like the number 13.

Thinking of another spread with a rocky-looking B. Playing with other graphic shapes on a smaller scale.

Graphic shapes in negative space.

This one by far, is my favourite. Simple and clean. It's definitely going into the zine!!

Sometimes I'm not really sure what I'm doing is right, but I hope that's all part of the process. Next I'll need to think about the text in the zine.
