Exploring More Of Type & The Grid + Ideas For Zine

Explored more sketches of B today during the Joseph Churchill lecture. I also wrote down a list of words starting with B in preparation for the zine ideas. Was thinking of starting each page with a word that started with B - such as black, bold, brave etc..

I referenced a lot of these letterforms from Google. Sorry Sarah & Walter, I didn't note down every exact link - but I definitely won't be using any of them for my zine! These sketches were just to get the juices flowing!

Went home and played with the graph papers. Here's the culmination of my explorations on graph paper for the zine.
I particularly like this mozaic-style graph paper because it forced me to implement more organic shapes while sketching out more letterforms.

Here's more. I tried to do 3D, soundwaves, playing with the width of bowls, putting smaller Bs within bigger Bs, outlines and more :) I liked how this page turned out.

I also liked how this page turned out but it's definitely more organised. Not sure if it's good or bad - my style has always been clean/geometrical so I always have to remind myself to try not to be too perfect and think more out of the box sometimes.

Another attempt at a negative space B. I want to put it in my zine but I'm not sure if it's too simple...

B accents. Thinking of using these for decoration around the edges of the zine, for the borders.

I'm not sure where I was going with this, to be honest. I do like the 'connect-the-dots' silhouette of B.

My thoughts so far...
  • Having graph paper to work on is still a pretty good constraint - but there's definitely more room to explore compared to the black square exercise.
  • I think I've explored a lot regarding my letterform. What do you do when you have no ideas left?
  • What is good design? Isn't it different for everybody? What I think looks perfect and clean and nice may look boring to another.
  • I might need to do some research on magazine layouts.
